UEDC’s mission is to improve the lives of underserved populations by providing economic empowerment, housing and employment services, and education and community programs administered through community, business, and agency partnerships.
Unity Economic Development Corporation (UEDC) was created as an outreach arm of Union Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1868 in Brandywine, Md. Members of the congregation started the effort as a “self-help” organization for people in the community who came to the church to request cash assistance for living expenses such as housing, utilities, food and medicine. The mission of the organization is to provide “self-empowerment tools” that would give people a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.” The organization was formally chartered as a nonprofit organization on July 5, 2002. It became a HUD-approved housing counseling agency in 2010.
